Hiking Boots Care Guide
Your boots are your most important piece of outdoor gear. They protect your feet, provide traction, and endure the toughest terrains. But to keep them performing at their best, regular maintenance is essential.
This guide walks you through cleaning, reproofing, and storing your Fjern hiking boots — ensuring they stay in top condition for many adventures to come.
Why boot care matters
Your boots take a beating — mud, sharp rocks, water, and harsh weather all take their toll. Over time, neglecting boot care can lead to:
-
Reduced waterproofing
Dirt clogs breathable membranes, causing leaks
-
Material degradation
Leather dries out and cracks; fabric loses strength
-
Compromised comfort
A buildup of dirt and salt can harden materials, affecting fit
By following these simple steps, you can extend the lifespan of your boots and protect your investment.
Step 1: Prepare your workspace
Before you start, gather the necessary equipment:
- Clean, lukewarm water
- Soft-bristle brush or sponge
- Water-based footwear cleaner, e.g. Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel
- Water-based reproofer, e.g. Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof
- Newspaper (for drying)
Step 2: Remove surface dirt
- Remove the laces to access hidden dirt around eyelets and flex points
- Rinse the boots with clean water to loosen dirt
- Brush off loose dirt using a dry, soft-bristle brush
- Rinse your boots under lukewarm water — don’t soak them
- Scrub gently with a brush or sponge, working into creases and seams
Step 3: Deep clean with a footwear cleaner
- Apply a water-based cleaning gel to remove embedded dirt
- Work it into the material using a sponge or soft brush
- Pay attention to high-wear areas (stitching, flex points, and under the laces)
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water, ensuring no residue remains
Step 4: Restore waterproofing
Once clean, it’s time to reproof your boots to maintain their water resistance.
- While boots are still damp, apply a water-based reproofer evenly across the surface
- Focus on seams, stitching, and flex points — these areas are most prone to water penetration
- Allow the product to absorb for 5 minutes, then wipe off excess with a cloth
Step 5: Drying your boots
- Place your boots in a well-ventilated space, away from direct heat sources (no radiators, fireplaces, or intense sunlight)
- Stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture, replacing it as needed
- Allow boots to air dry completely before storing or using them
Step 6: Inspect & store correctly
- Check for wear and tear — inspect the soles, seams, and any signs of cracking
- Re-lace your boots and store them in a cool, dry place
- If storing long-term, use shoe trees or stuffing to maintain their shape
When to Clean & Reproof Your Boots
-
After every hike
Remove surface dirt and dry properly
-
After every wet or muddy trek
Deep clean and inspect for water damage
-
Reproof when water stops beading
If moisture absorbs into the material rather than rolling off, it’s time to reapply waterproofing
Ready for your next adventure?
Taking a few minutes to care for your boots saves you money, protects your feet, and extends their lifespan. Whether trekking through rugged mountains or forest trails, well-maintained boots ensure you stay comfortable and dry.
